Beneath the Old Church’s ancient stones lie the secrets of Amsterdam. This isn’t just a building it’s a time capsule. A testament to centuries of life death and faith.

The Oude Kerk Amsterdam’s oldest structure. It stands proudly on Oudekerksplein. Its foundation a testament to ingenuity laid on an artificial mound. This provided a solid base in the marshy land. Construction began around 1213. It was consecrated in 1306 by the Bishop of Utrecht. Saint Nicolas became its patron saint.

The church wasn’t always as we see it today. Imagine a small wooden chapel. Over time this was replaced by a stone church. Fifteen generations of Amsterdammers helped renovate it. The aisles were lengthened. Transepts were added creating a cross shape. Great fires in 1421 and 1452 slowed construction. It took almost a year to recover.

The Reformation of 1578 changed everything. The Oude Kerk went from Roman Catholic to Calvinist. The Beeldenstorm of 1566 damaged the church. Much of the art was destroyed. Only unreachable ceiling paintings survived. The church was used as a meeting place for locals. They gossiped here. Peddlers sold goods. Beggars sought shelter. The Calvinists expelled the homeless. In 1681 they closed off the choir with an oak screen. The text above it reads “The prolonged misuse of God’s church were here undone again in the year seventy-eight”.

The Old Church became the registry for marriages. It also held city archives. The most important documents were locked in an iron chest. This was kept safe in the iron chapel.

Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck a famous organist and composer served at the Oude Kerk. His career started at age fifteen. He composed music for all 150 Psalms. He achieved international fame. Sweelinck is buried in the church.

Rembrandt a frequent visitor had his children christened here. The Oude Kerk houses a small Rembrandt exhibition. It’s a shrine to his wife Saskia van Uylenburgh. She’s buried here. Each year on March 9th the morning sun illuminates her tomb. An early spring breakfast event is held to commemorate her.

The Oude Kerk is massive covering 3300 square meters. Its ceiling is Europe’s largest medieval wooden vault. Estonian oak planks date to 1390. They provide exceptional acoustics. The church floor holds 2500 gravestones. Beneath them lie 10000 Amsterdam citizens. Among them are naval heroes renowned composers and regents. The Oude Kerk holds four pipe organs. The Vater-Müller organ a Baroque masterpiece is among them.

Today the Old Church is a contemporary art center and heritage site. It hosts site-specific installations. A permanent exhibit showcases its history and that of Amsterdam. The Oude Kerk reminds us of Amsterdam’s rich and complex history. It’s a place where past present and future intersect. Step inside and let its story unfold.
