Imagine the Gouwzee shimmering before you. This body of water holds stories of resilience and natural beauty. Today we will explore the Gouwzee.
The Gouwzee is more than just water. It is a crucial part of the Markermeer nature reserve. It sits between Waterland and Marken. Marken is a former island. Since 1957, a dam has connected it to the mainland.
Look at the clear water. It is quite shallow here. The Gouwzee is known for its clean and quiet water. This attracts many migratory birds. In late summer, large numbers of common pochards gather. They prepare for their autumn migration. The Gouwzee is a haven for wildlife.
Recreational activities thrive here. You might spot a few sailboats. Surfers also enjoy the Gouwzee’s waters.
Monnickendam and Volendam lie along the Gouwzee. My home of Monnickendam is on one side. Volendam is on the other. Both towns offer unique experiences.
Take a closer look at Marken in the distance. It was once an island. Now, a dyke-motorway connects it to North-Holland. Marken faced many challenges as an island. The Zuiderzee could be harsh.
In 1916, a great flood struck Marken. Lives were lost. Amidst the disaster, a miracle occurred. A baby named Lijsje was born in an attic. Floodwaters sloshed beneath her crib.
Queen Wilhelmina visited the area. She was moved by Lijsje’s story. She became Lijsje’s godmother. Lijsje was then renamed Mina.
The Gouwzee reminds us of nature’s power. It also shows us the strength of communities. The story of Lijsje shows how life can begin even during tragedy. The Gouwzee is a special place. Its beauty and history offer a unique glimpse into the Netherlands.
