A small amphitheatre. It’s a replica of the first school in Europe. This is Plato’s Akademie in Amsterdam. Ben Raaijman designed it in 2014. His inspiration? The original Academy in Athens.

Plato’s Academy. A name that echoes through history. It was the first institution of higher learning in the West. Think of biology geography astronomy mathematics history. All studied and investigated there. Aristotle spent twenty years there. Then he founded his own school the Lyceum.

Imagine the conversations. The debates. The minds that shaped Western thought. Plato himself taught there. His students pondered the nature of reality. They wrestled with ideas of justice and ethics. Two women Axiothea and Lasthenia even studied there defying convention.

The original Academy in Athens was more than a school. It was a sacred space. Located in a grove of olive trees dedicated to Athena. It held a religious cult since the Bronze Age. It even survived many wars. The Spartan army spared it. They respected its sacred traditions and association with the gods Castor and Polydeuces.

But the Roman dictator Sulla destroyed it. In 86 BC he cut down the olive trees to build siege engines. The Academy’s physical presence vanished. Yet its legacy lived on. A neo-Platonic Academy later rose. Its scholars continued the tradition.

This small amphitheatre in Amsterdam is a tribute to that legacy. A quiet reminder of the power of ideas. Of the enduring impact of learning and philosophical inquiry. It is a beautiful space for quiet contemplation a place to connect with the past. It reminds us that even after physical destruction knowledge and ideas persist. Plato’s Akademie in Amsterdam lives on.
