Have you ever seen a windmill with a wingspan of 26 30 meters? That’s De Slokop. This magnificent structure stands tall in Spaarndam. It’s a testament to Dutch ingenuity and a vital part of the region’s history.

De Slokop is more than just a pretty picture. It’s a poldermill a type of windmill designed to drain water from low-lying areas. For centuries it played a crucial role in keeping the surrounding polders dry. Think of it as a giant water pump powered by wind. Farmers depended on De Slokop to protect their land from flooding.

Originally a scoop wheel mill De Slokop was replaced in 1872 by the current screw-type mill. The mill was incredibly important. It drained the large Vereenigde Binnenpolder. This polder is 705 hectares. It worked alongside De Liedemolen until 1927. That year De Liedemolen’s main shaft broke. It was then replaced with a screw-type pump. This left De Slokop as a backup. It was eventually decommissioned in 1950.

Interestingly De Slokop received 100 guilders from the Marshall Plan. This was a post-World War II program designed to rebuild Europe’s economy. The money helped with restoration work. This is just one small piece of the fascinating story of this landmark.

De Slokop is a unique eight-sided ground sailer. This means it sits directly on the ground without a raised platform. This design makes it easier to access and operate. The mill’s location is also significant. It’s situated near the Stelling van Amsterdam. This is a defense line of forts and fortifications. De Slokop even played a part in military exercises early in the 20th century.

Today De Slokop continues to stand as a symbol of perseverance. It is a remarkable piece of Dutch heritage. Its story is one of hard work adaptation and survival against the elements. It’s a story written in the wind and etched into the landscape. It’s a windmill you’ll never forget.
