Hidden amidst the vibrant city of Amsterdam stands a tribute to a global gathering of unity and friendship: the 5th World Scout Jamboree memorial Column. This unassuming wooden column marks a significant moment in Scouting history. It commemorates the 5th World Scout Jamboree held in Vogelenzang, Bloemendaal, Netherlands, in 1937. The 5th World Scout Jamboree memorial Column silently observes the passage of time, bearing witness to the echoes of nearly 29,000 Scouts from 54 nations. They gathered here, united by their shared values and the spirit of Scouting. This Jamboree was particularly special. It was where the 81-year-old founder of Scouting, Robert Baden-Powell, delivered his poignant farewell address. Imagine the scene: thousands of young Scouts listening intently as their beloved leader imparted his final words of wisdom. Baden-Powell, standing tall despite his age, pointed to the Jamboree’s symbol: the Jacob’s Staff. This navigational tool, with its ten arms, symbolized the ten commandments of the Scout Law. He urged the Scouts to uphold these principles throughout their lives. His words resonated deeply with the young crowd, leaving a lasting impression on the future of Scouting. The 5th World Scout Jamboree wasn’t just a gathering of Scouts; it was a celebration of cleanliness. With 650 water taps and 120 showers available, it earned the distinction of being the “cleanest jamboree to date.” Even amidst the camaraderie and activities, there was a notable absence. Girls were not official participants in the Jamboree until much later, at the 16th World Scout Jamboree in Australia. However, they were given a special opportunity to salute Olave Baden-Powell, their Chief Guide. Cub Scouts also had their moment in the spotlight with a dedicated day organized during the Jamboree. The 5th World Scout Jamboree memorial Column stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of Scouting. It reminds us of the power of unity, the importance of service, and the legacy of Baden-Powell.
