High above Amsterdam’s Zuidas the KPN tower stands tall. Its silhouette a familiar sight against the city skyline. This isn’t just any tower. It’s a vital part of Amsterdam’s communication infrastructure. A silent giant beaming signals across the city and beyond.
The KPN tower wasn’t always this imposing. It began life much shorter. In fact originally it was a PTT tower. Over time the city grew up around it. New high-rise buildings blocked its signals. This meant the tower needed an upgrade.
So in 2009 a major renovation project took place. The tower received a significant height increase. It grew by over forty meters reaching its current impressive height of 146 meters. This was no small feat. The foundation needed major reinforcement. 600 cubic meters of concrete were added to the base. The tower’s shaft was thickened significantly. 700 cubic meters of concrete made it stronger and more stable. A massive crane 160 meters high was used to complete the upgrade.
More than just a telecommunications hub the KPN tower is a symbol of Amsterdam’s technological evolution. Inside the tower are over 120 dishes. These dishes transmit FM and Digitenne signals. They also handle data for mobile phones and internet traffic. Not only KPN uses it. Other providers such as Vodafone Telfort and T-Mobile also utilize its infrastructure.
The tower’s expansion wasn’t limited to height. A new energy building was constructed alongside it. This was crucial to support the rapid growth in computer traffic. The electricity capacity was significantly increased from 350W/m2 to a total power density of 2000W/m2. The need for this upgrade is evidenced by the emergency generators placed near the tower.
Today the KPN tower is a testament to Amsterdam’s technological prowess. A silent sentinel keeping Amsterdam connected to the world. Look up and you’ll see more than just a tower. You’ll see a piece of Amsterdam’s history and its future. A symbol of connection and progress. The KPN tower truly is a landmark worth admiring.
