Picture a quaint village nestled in the heart of the Beemster polder. This is Westbeemster a charming town in North Holland. It’s a place where history and modern life blend seamlessly. Originally planned elsewhere Westbeemster emerged as a Catholic enclave near a hidden church. Now that church is a cafe called De Kerckhaen.

Westbeemster is small. In 2001 it had only 117 inhabitants. Its built-up area was tiny only 0.04 square kilometers. It contained just 40 residences. Yet Westbeemster has grown. By 2020 the population had increased to 810 inhabitants. This growth is a testament to its enduring charm. Many find Westbeemster’s peaceful atmosphere appealing.

The village is centered around its church and De Kerckhaen. The cafe adds a modern touch to the historical setting. In the 1950s and 60s small-scale new construction added a few extra streets. This expansion carefully preserved the village’s character. Westbeemster retains a sense of intimacy and community.

Its location is ideal. It’s conveniently located near Alkmaar and Hoorn. Purmerend is also within easy reach. Since 2022 Westbeemster is part of the municipality of Purmerend. This change reflects the ongoing evolution of the area’s governance. However it hasn’t diminished Westbeemster’s unique identity.

Westbeemster lacks shops. Residents often go to Middenbeemster for daily necessities. Despite its size Westbeemster boasts a thriving community spirit. It hosts an annual fair complete with activities and live music at De Kerckhaen. It even has its own Catholic primary school De Lourdesschool and a unique agricultural daycare De Loeiende Koe. Children there spend their days among cows and other animals.

Westbeemster’s story is one of resilience and growth. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of a small village. A village that embraces its history while looking towards the future. Come and experience the charm of Westbeemster for yourself. Discover the unique blend of history and modern life in this beautiful corner of North Holland.
