Diving deep into the history of Ouderkerkerplas, we uncover a story of transformation. This expansive lake, nestled near Ouderkerk aan de Amstel, wasn’t always a glistening body of water. Ouderkerkerplas began as dry land, part of the Holendrechter and Bullewijkerpolders. In the 1960s, the need for sand to construct the A9 highway spurred a dramatic change. The earth was excavated, revealing a deep pit that eventually filled with water. This seemingly simple act of digging created the Ouderkerkerplas we see today. Ouderkerkerplas spans 75 hectares. At its deepest point, it plunges down a remarkable 45 meters. Initially, the lake even served as a dumping ground for concrete waste. Imagine the scene, trucks rumbling along the newly formed banks, depositing their loads into the growing void. However, plans to fill a significant portion of the lake with construction debris for another highway connection were thankfully abandoned. Today, Ouderkerkerplas is a haven for both recreation and nature. As part of the Groengebied Amstelland, a joint project of several municipalities including Amsterdam, it draws nearly half a million visitors each year. People flock to Ouderkerkerplas for swimming, surfing, and diving. The shores buzz with activity, offering walking paths, cycling routes, a riding trail, and spaces for picnics and barbecues. The Watersportvereniging Ouderkerkerplas (WVOP) adds to the vibrant atmosphere. Beyond the human activity, Ouderkerkerplas teems with wildlife. Various bird species, such as common snipe, sand martins, gadwalls, wigeons, tufted ducks, and shovelers, either breed here or settle in for the winter. The lake’s depth and the inflow of saltwater from the North Sea, roughly 30 kilometers away, prevent it from completely freezing over in winter. This creates a unique brackish environment. This also attracts wintering waterfowl like Eurasian wigeons and various geese. Ouderkerkerplas is a testament to the power of transformation. From a sandpit supplying material for a highway to a vital recreational and ecological resource, it has evolved remarkably. It stands as a reminder that even landscapes seemingly altered by human intervention can find new life, supporting both human enjoyment and natural diversity. Look around you. The wind whispers stories of change across the water, a constant reminder of Ouderkerkerplas’s remarkable journey.
