Isn’t it fascinating how a place can transform from a mere geographical point to a named entity? We’re standing in Amsterdam-Duivendrecht. It is an area that officially gained its own identity in 2014.

Amsterdam-Duivendrecht is not just another district. It is a designated place with its own postcode. This area was carved out from Duivendrecht. It includes the southern part of the Amstel Business Park. Some folks might find this a bit unusual.

The boundaries of Amsterdam-Duivendrecht are quite specific. To the north is the Amsterdam-Utrecht railway line. Amsterdam’s eastern municipal boundary marks another border. The A2 motorway forms a clear edge. Finally, the border with Amsterdam Zuidoost completes the perimeter.

So why did this happen? Well, the municipalities of Ouder-Amstel and PostNL decided it was time. They consulted with businesses in the area. They aimed to create a separate residential area.

This new entity includes a significant business area. We are talking about 80 hectares of Amstel Business Park. You will also find garden parks here. There is even a golf course called Amsterdam Old Course.

Moreover, Amsterdam-Duivendrecht is home to Amstelborch, also known as Borchland. Don’t forget Sportpark De Toekomst. All these locations now fall under the Amsterdam-Duivendrecht banner.

Duivendrecht itself has a rich history. The village was first mentioned in 1308. It was then known as Doevendrecht. The name means ferry of Doeve a person.

Duivendrecht started growing in the 19th century. Eventually, it became surrounded by Amsterdam, Diemen, and Bijlmermeer. The local railway station is a major interchange point. It opened in 1993.

The Saint Urbanus Church is a notable landmark in Duivendrecht. It was built between 1877 and 1878. This replaced an older church from 1840.

The origins of the name Duivendrecht are not certain. One old Latin version suggests a connection in a watery area. Duivendrecht has always been a place with many connecting routes. Even now it serves both cars and trains.

Another explanation suggests a man named Doeve lived by the drecht. He kept watch and collected tolls. Others say the name comes from “de overdrecht”. This refers to a crossing over the drecht.

Historically, the area belonged to Utrecht. Later, it shifted closer to Holland. By 1343, Duivendrecht was supplying goods to the Count’s court. The Duivendrechtsebrug was famous. It was on the road between Amsterdam and Utrecht.

Amsterdam-Duivendrecht is a fascinating place. It represents a blend of history and modern development. Its strategic location and clear boundaries define its unique identity. It’s a testament to how places evolve and adapt over time.
