Opened in 1967, De Pauluskerk stands as a testament to modern religious architecture. De Pauluskerk was designed by architect Jos van Leeuwen. The church embodies the spirit of the Second Vatican Council. It was designed to create a sense of community and inclusivity. The layout fosters a close connection between the congregation and the service. This reflects the optimistic and forward-thinking religious climate of the 1960s. De Pauluskerk wasn’t just a place of worship. It originally served a dual purpose as a theater until 1977. It was part of a larger parish complex. The design carefully integrates various functions within distinct building volumes. The main worship space at De Pauluskerk demonstrates a meticulous approach to form and materials. This creates a unique spatial experience. The combination of brick, concrete, and wood adds to the church’s distinctive character. The materials are carefully chosen and detailed. High above the main entrance, a bronze bell weighing 675 kg proclaims “NIHIL SINE VOCE,” meaning “Nothing without its own voice.” This bell, cast by the Royal Bell Foundry Petit & Fritsen B.V., resonates with the church’s history. In December 2019, the Diocese of Haarlem-Amsterdam decided to merge several parishes in the Nieuw-West district. De Pauluskerk became the main church of the newly formed parish, De Vier Evangelisten. Today, De Pauluskerk remains a vital center for the community, its unique architecture and history echoing the evolving role of faith in modern times.
