Gazing across the tranquil waters of the Liede, can you sense the echoes of a time when Fort aan de Liede stood as a silent guardian? Fort aan de Liede, a seemingly unassuming structure, holds a story far richer than its current appearance suggests. It played a crucial role in Amsterdam’s defense. It’s a key part of the Stelling van Amsterdam, a network of fortifications built to protect the city. But Fort aan de Liede’s origins predate the Stelling. It’s older than most of the other forts in the system. With the draining of the Haarlemmermeer lake in the mid-19th century, Amsterdam became vulnerable from the southwest. Fort aan de Liede was part of a series of tower forts constructed between 1843 and 1846 to address this vulnerability. This fort, along with Fort aan het Schiphol, was strategically positioned within the Ringvaart itself, the canal encircling the Haarlemmermeerpolder. The arrival of the brisant grenade around 1885 rendered traditional brick forts obsolete. Fort aan de Liede’s original tower fort was demolished and replaced by an earthen defense wall. During World War I, concrete bunkers, known as kazematten, were added to the fort. Fort aan de Liede served a crucial purpose. It defended the vital access route between Amsterdam and Haarlem, consisting of the railway, towpath, and road. A connecting road to Fort bij Schiphol, now Spaarnwouderweg-Schipholweg, was intended to function as a flood defense. This plan, however, was never realized. While a standard fort was initially considered for this location, it was ultimately deemed unnecessary due to the proximity of Fort bij de Liebrug and Fort bij Vijfhuizen. Today, few visible remnants of the fort’s military past remain on the site. The landscape around Fort aan de Liede still evokes a sense of the past, with its open polder land to the west and south. The fort itself is now used for storage by Rijkswaterstaat, the Dutch water management authority. While not open to the public, its story endures, a quiet testament to Amsterdam’s layered defenses.
