“Shadows tell stories” is a fascinating statement. Here at the Wayang Tugela Installation, shadows dance to life. This unique artwork transforms an ordinary tunnel into an immersive experience.

Wayang Tugela is located in a pedestrian and bicycle tunnel near Wibautstraat in Amsterdam Oost. This 40-meter-long tunnel runs under the railroad tracks. Nio Architects created this installation in 2013. It turns a simple tunnel into a meaningful space. It transports visitors to another world.

Imagine walking or cycling through this tunnel. You are surrounded by 12000 LED lights. These lights create a mesmerizing display on both walls. The walls act like giant screens. They offer glimpses into a different world.

The Wayang Tugela tells a story from the animal kingdom. The installation features ‘the big five’ from Transvaal in South Africa. These are the elephant, the rhino, the lion, the buffalo, and the leopard. The animal figures are created using a negative effect. The contours appear where the lights are off creating shadows.

The walls are covered with a screen of matted, hardened glass. This glass features a natural, reed-like pattern. Behind this screen, the LED lights create the illusion of animals moving. It’s as if you’re on safari. If you are lucky, you might see a grazing buffalo. Perhaps a leopard that has just woken up or an elephant lifting its head. Sometimes you might see nothing but light.

The artwork evokes the slow and unpredictable rhythm of animal life. It is not a nature documentary. It is a life-sized representation of animal existence over time. The Wayang Tugela installation is reminiscent of Indonesian shadow puppets. This is where the name Wayang comes from. It can also remind you of prehistoric cave paintings. The artwork can even feel like a lucid dream.

The name Transvaal refers to a neighborhood in the Netherlands. Many of these neighborhoods are named after the Transvaal. This was an independent state in South Africa in the 19th century. It was ruled by the Boers. Many street names in the area reflect this colonial past. Some squares have been renamed after anti-apartheid fighters. A prominent example is Steve Biko Square.

The Wayang Tugela offers a multi-layered experience. It encourages viewers to create their own animal stories. Each person can interpret the shadows and lights in their unique way. This installation transforms a mundane tunnel into a space of wonder. It connects art, nature, and history.
