Built between 1963 and 1965 the H Ludgerus kerk stands proudly in Loenen aan de Vecht. This modern church replaced an older neo-Gothic structure. The old church needed extensive renovations. It was deemed more practical to build a new church and school in Loenen’s village center. This location offered better centrality and was near new housing developments. The decision to build a new church in Loenen was made in 1962. Land had already been purchased on the Rijzicht in anticipation of this project. The H Ludgerus kerk’s design is the work of the architectural firm Joh Sluijmer and Ir J H Sluijmer. They created a modern space with approximately 440 seats plus 50 extra.
The H Ludgerus kerk isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to community spirit and resilience. The old church’s collapse in 1962 hastened the move. Masses were temporarily held in a makeshift setting. The St Jozefgebouw and a school gymnasium served as temporary worship spaces. The old church was sold to a cheese exporter. Its artistic treasures and furnishings ended up with an Amsterdam antiquarian. The construction of the H Ludgerus kerk was a major undertaking. The contract was awarded to Fa Van Kooten. The cost was a substantial 317000 guilders.
The H Ludgerus kerk’s consecration was a significant event. Cardinal Alfrink himself performed the ceremony on April 3 1965. This act marked the restoration of the original patron saint of the Loenersloot parish. The church’s patron saint had been changed to Our Lady of Mount Carmel. However the H Ludgerus had been Loenen’s patron saint since before the Reformation. The decision to reinstate the H Ludgerus as patron saint reflects a deep-rooted connection to the area’s history. The H Ludgerus kerk stands as a symbol of this enduring faith. The church’s architectural design and its rich history make it a noteworthy landmark. The H Ludgerus kerk is more than just a place of worship. It is a living testament to the enduring spirit of Loenen aan de Vecht. The H Ludgerus kerk is a beautiful example of post-war church architecture. It also showcases the community’s commitment to its religious heritage.
