Thirty-seven meters deep. That’s how deep the Sloterplas is. Can you imagine? This seemingly serene lake in Amsterdam Nieuw-West holds a surprising secret. Its depths conceal a history as rich and layered as the city itself.

The Sloterplas wasn’t always a lake. Before it became the heart of Amsterdam’s Westelijke Tuinsteden it was the Slootermeer a shallow lake existing since the Middle Ages. The prevailing southwesterly winds sculpted its elongated shape. Then between 1642 and 1644 the lake was drained. A polder emerged a fertile landscape that remained agricultural until the mid-20th century.

The idea of a recreational lake here came much later. Cornelis van Eesteren sketched the concept in 1929. His vision was realized as part of Amsterdam’s Algemeen Uitbreidingsplan (AUP) in 1935. The low-lying polder was excavated. This created a recreational lake the centerpiece of the planned Westelijke Tuinsteden. Van Eesteren and his team drew inspiration from English and German parks even mirroring the Maschsee in Hannover. The design blends elements of romantic English landscape style with functionalist design particularly visible in the straight sections of the east bank.

The excavation between 1948 and 1956 was a massive undertaking. The fertile peat and clay layers were used to raise the recreational area around the Sloterplas. The lake itself was dug to a depth of 45 meters before being filled with rubble to its current depth. The sand from this excavation was used to elevate the surrounding neighborhoods. This impressive feat of engineering transformed a former polder into a vibrant focal point.

Today the Sloterplas is a popular spot for a range of activities. Sailing canoeing fishing and diving are all enjoyed here. The oldest underwater house in the Netherlands the Cockel Bockel sits on the eastern shore. A triathlon takes place here annually. The Sloterstrand a popular recreational beach offers sunbathing and swimming.

In 2024 the entire Sloterplas and its banks were designated a protected townscape. A testament to its unique history and the well-preserved elements of the AUP. The Sloterplas is much more than just a lake. It is a vibrant part of Amsterdam’s history a testament to urban planning and a beloved recreational space. Its quiet waters reflect the city’s dynamism and its tranquil shores whisper stories of its past.
