Gazing at the Draaibrug, have you ever considered its 200-year history? This isn’t just any bridge. The Draaibrug, officially bridge number 2205, stands as a testament to Amsterdam’s engineering ingenuity. Located in Amsterdam-Noord, the Draaibrug spans the Noordhollandsch Kanaal. Its story begins around 1822. When the canal was dug, a swing bridge, a “doorvaartbrug”, was needed. This bridge was placed near the village of Buiksloot. It intersected the Waterlandse Zeedijk, where houses and the Burg van Alkmaar once stood. Unlike most bridges on the canal, which were “vlotbruggen” (floating bridges) designed by Jan Blanken, the Draaibrug was a rotating marvel. Interestingly, just south of the Draaibrug, a vlotbrug also existed. This seemingly redundant placement highlights the importance of navigation in this area. Around 1922, a double swing bridge, also designed by Blanken, stood in place of the original. This innovative design maximized the passage width for ships. As shipping traffic declined, Rijkswaterstaat replaced the aging bridge around 1952. Cleverly, they reused the top deck of a similar bridge from Alkmaar, showcasing a practical approach to infrastructure. The current Draaibrug, designed for pedestrians and cyclists, operates using a clever “bolshinge” mechanism. The bol opens first, followed by a bowl-shaped part, reversing for closure. The Draaibrug, a unique landmark in Amsterdam-Noord, connects past and present. Its innovative design and long history reflect the evolving needs of the city. A nearby bridge keeper’s house, built in 1984, has been repurposed as an overnight accommodation. The Draaibrug stands not just as a crossing, but as a symbol of Amsterdam’s resourcefulness.
