What secrets does this statue hold? The Stedemaagd stands here, a proud symbol of Amsterdam. It is more than just a statue. It represents the spirit and history of this vibrant city.

The Stedemaagd, meaning “Maid of the City,” is a personification of Amsterdam. This statue at the Vondelpark entrance is not the only one. You can find her image throughout Amsterdam if you look closely.

This particular Stedemaagd was created by Friedrich Schierholz in 1883. He worked with Alexander Linnemann, the architect who designed the gate. The statue was commissioned to enhance the park’s prestige. This was especially important during the International Colonial and Export Exhibition of 1883.

In 2009, the original statue was removed due to wear and tear. A replica now stands in its place, made by Ton Mooy. It is crafted from durable Bentheimer sandstone. This ensures the Stedemaagd will grace the park for many years to come.

The original Stedemaagd has not disappeared forever. After restoration in 2014, it was moved to the Koenenkade in the Amsterdamse Bos. There it stands under the name Stedenmaagd Amsterdamse Bos.

The Stedemaagd embodies Amsterdam’s values. She sits on a throne holding a shield with Amsterdam’s coat of arms. With her right hand, she invites visitors to enter the Vondelpark.

The Stedemaagd image evolved over time. Once seen as a goddess, she later transformed into a queen. Eventually she became a mother figure, watching over the city.

Other notable depictions of the Stedemaagd exist around Amsterdam. The Royal Palace on Dam Square features her prominently. She appears on the palace’s tympanums, both front and back. These sculptures, created by Artus Quellinus, show the city’s power and global connections. The Stedemaagd receives tributes from around the world in these depictions.

So, as you gaze upon the Stedemaagd, remember her story. She is a guardian, a symbol, and a piece of Amsterdam’s soul. She has been watching over this city for centuries, and hopefully for centuries to come.
