Can you smell that? It is the unique aroma of coal fire and machine grease. That smell embodies the heart of the Stoomgemaal Halfweg. This is the oldest and largest working paddle-wheel pumping station in the world.
The Stoomgemaal Halfweg stands as a testament to Dutch ingenuity. It showcases their relentless battle against water. This museum played a vital role in managing water levels. It kept the Haarlemmermeer polder dry from 1852 to 1977.
Let’s step back in time. Imagine the Netherlands in the mid-19th century. The Haarlemmermeer was a vast lake. It often flooded the surrounding lands. Draining this lake was essential. It was crucial for expanding agricultural land and improving transportation.
The Rijnland Water Board took on this challenge. They commissioned the construction of three steam pumping stations. These were in Spaarndam, Halfweg, and Gouda. The Stoomgemaal Halfweg was completed in 1852. It quickly became the most important of the three.
Inside the Stoomgemaal Halfweg, you will discover the impressive Stork steam engine. This engine powered six paddle wheels. Together, they could move 1.5 million liters of water per minute. This is a staggering amount.
The Stoomgemaal Halfweg underwent two major upgrades. These took place in 1888 and 1923. These enhancements increased its pumping capacity. Remarkably, it continued to rely on steam power. Other pumping stations switched to electric power.
For 125 years, the Stoomgemaal Halfweg tirelessly pumped water. It discharged an incredible 14 billion cubic meters. It consumed 40,000 tons of coal. This feat of engineering prevented the pumping station from being demolished after it was decommissioned in 1977. A group of dedicated enthusiasts saved the Stoomgemaal Halfweg.
The Stoomgemaal Halfweg reopened as a museum in 1987. Prince Claus himself inaugurated it. Today, volunteers maintain and operate the pumping station. They host public steam days. In 2019, a new boiler was installed. This ensured that the Stoomgemaal Halfweg could continue operating under steam.
Take a moment to appreciate the rhythmic sounds of the steam engine. Notice the scent of hot metal. Feel the vibrations beneath your feet. The Stoomgemaal Halfweg is not just a museum. It is a living monument. It honors the Dutch spirit of innovation. It celebrates their determination to conquer water. Today, the building is also available for parties, weddings and meetings.
