“A grand estate, hidden in plain sight.” That’s Villa Betty for you, nestled between the bustling Overtoom and the tranquil Vondelpark. Villa Betty sits closer to the park, almost whispering secrets to the trees. Built in 1877 for tobacco merchants, the original cornerstone bears the name of a two-year-old, P.H.F.M. Smithuijsen, marking a moment in time. The villa’s architect, Peter Laarman, masterfully blended architectural styles, creating an eclectic masterpiece with hints of chalet and Art Nouveau. In 1896, a young tobacco heir, Eduard Lehmann, acquired Villa Betty, transforming it into a lavish palace for his beloved, Betty von Hunteln. It was then that Overtoom 241 truly became Villa Betty. Another cornerstone commemorates Betty, marking additions like the stables and coach house. Imagine the scene in 1900: the Overtoom, still a canal, reflecting the grandeur of the newly renovated villa. Inside, rooms were adorned in various international styles: Dutch, French, Arabian, Chinese, and English, reflecting the Lehmann’s worldly tastes. The villa hosted artists like Breitner, Israëls, and Mesdag, solidifying Betty’s status as the “Queen of Overtoom.” Betty’s life at the villa spanned decades. She witnessed the Overtoom transform from a canal to a bustling street. She experienced both opulent joy and quiet sorrow within those walls. Even the tragic loss of her husband Eduard, and later, her second husband, Cornelius, who bravely saved Jewish lives during WWII by forging Aryan declarations, couldn’t diminish her connection to this place. After a long life, spanning a century, Betty passed away in 1980. The villa was sold, its treasures auctioned off, marking the end of an era. Even a grand portrait of Betty met its end in the garden flames, a final, dramatic farewell. Today, Villa Betty remains a hidden gem, a testament to a remarkable woman and a bygone era. Its unique history, architectural beauty, and serene setting near the Vondelpark continue to captivate.
