Listen to a tale of ambition and transformation at the Mollnhof. This building behind me holds secrets. It whispers stories of fires and rebirth. It speaks of a legacy tied to the very fabric of Passau.

The Mollnhof, once a humble country estate, now stands as a testament to the city’s rich history. Back in 1560, this was the rural seat of Wolfgang Friedrich Moll. He was a prince-bishop’s administrator. It is from him that the Mollnhof got its name. The Italian architect Bernardino likely designed it.

Imagine this place in 1704. Max Emanuel, the Elector of Bavaria, set up his headquarters here. Passau was under siege during the War of the Spanish Succession. The Max-Emanuel-Strasse nearby commemorates this event.

Now, here is a twist. An old survey from 1827 shows the Mollnhof. Then known as Molnbauer. It was originally located on the east side of Vornholzstrasse. The building we see today stands on the opposite side.

Disaster struck in 1831. Flames engulfed the original Mollnhof. But from the ashes, a new Mollnhof arose. By 1835, a new structure stood on the west side of the street.

For a time, the city of Passau owned the Mollnhof. Their intention was noble. They wanted to create a haven for animals. But in 1963, they sold it to the church.

The Mollnhof faced further challenges. From 1970 to 1978, its outbuildings were torn down. The main house was spared. Yet it began to decay.

But the Mollnhof’s story does not end in ruin. Between 1989 and 1995, the facade underwent restoration. In 1999, a comprehensive renovation breathed new life into the building. The window stucco, balustrades, and cornices were meticulously recreated. For a while, the Mollnhof served as office space for a construction firm.

Most recently, in March 2016, a new chapter began. A group of tax advisors purchased the Mollnhof.

The Mollnhof stands as a symbol of Passau’s resilience. It has seen war, fire, neglect, and renewal. It is a reminder that even in the face of adversity, beauty and purpose can be restored. It has transformed from a rural retreat to a modern office building, adapting to the times while retaining its historical charm.
