“A positive open attitude makes life a lot more fun” That’s the motto of Breugem Bier. This isn’t just any brewery. It’s a story of resilience and community right here in Amsterdam’s Houthavens.
Breugem Bier started in 2009. It was founded by Patrick Breugem. He’s a master brewer with a remarkable past. Before starting his own brewery Patrick worked at several well-known breweries. He brewed at De Prael De Molen Het Veulen and De Zeven Deugden. He had a serious accident years ago. Patrick was in a coma for weeks. He recovered and poured his energy into brewing. He created Breugem Bier.
Breugem isn’t just about delicious beer. It’s about social inclusion. The brewery actively employs people who face challenges in the job market. They give them a chance. They create a welcoming space. Breugem proves that good beer and social responsibility can coexist. The brewery even started as a foundation. Breugem’s Brouwerij aimed to be a social brewery. It helped people with disabilities find work. They experienced the difficulties of re-entering the workforce after a coma.
The brewery produces several beers. Their popular beers include Zoentje Knipoog Man Hug Boks High Five and Handdruk. They also brew seasonal beers. These seasonal brews are called Compliment Applaus Warme Groet and Flirt. Breugem sources local ingredients whenever possible. They also strive for sustainability. They minimize waste.

It’s a place where you can taste delicious beer. You can also support a good cause. You can share a High Five or a Zoentje with friends. This place is a true Amsterdam gem.
