Slipping through time, let’s journey back to 1691. The Schakelkerk, a beacon of Protestant faith, first opened its doors in Amsterdam. The Schakelkerk wasn’t always the sturdy brick structure we see today. Originally, it was a humble wooden “preaching shed.” Known then as the Amstelkerk, it served as a temporary house of worship. A grand stone church was planned for the Amstelveld. But fate, it seems, had other ideas. The stone church never materialized, and Amsterdam gained a hidden gem. This “temporary” church, the Schakelkerk, became a beloved sanctuary. Imagine the murmur of prayers within its wooden walls. Picture sunlight streaming through the high windows, illuminating the space. This intimate atmosphere, described as having the elegance of a “jewellery box,” charmed many. Musicians lauded the phenomenal acoustics. The restored Bätz organ filled the air with sacred melodies. Today, the Schakelkerk continues to serve its community, its history echoing within its walls. This wooden church stands as a testament to resilience, a unique landmark in a city of stone and steel.
