Can you imagine a city of 1.4 million people relying on a single entity for their water? Right here, we stand before the headquarters of Waterschap Amstel, Gooi en Vecht. This organization, often abbreviated as AGV, isn’t just about keeping the canals picturesque. It’s the lifeblood of a vast region, spanning 700 square kilometers across three provinces: North Holland, Utrecht, and a sliver of South Holland. Waterschap Amstel, Gooi en Vecht is responsible for everything water-related. This includes flood protection, clean water supply, and ensuring enough water for homes, businesses, and leisure. Think about the complexity of that task. It’s a delicate balancing act, meeting diverse needs and keeping everyone happy. The AGV doesn’t work alone. It partners with Waternet, sharing a building and responsibilities. Before 2017, Waterschap Amstel, Gooi en Vecht was known as Hoogheemraadschap Amstel, Gooi en Vecht. It resulted from a merger between the Amstel en Vecht and Amstel- en Gooiland water boards. This merger brought together expertise and resources, making AGV a powerhouse of water management. They maintain over 1,000 kilometers of dikes and quays, vital defenses against flooding. They operate 59 locks and 231 pumping stations. These regulate water levels in the polders. Ensuring there’s not too much or too little water. And for clean water? Waterschap Amstel, Gooi en Vecht runs 12 water purification plants. These plants treat wastewater so it can safely return to the environment. So next time you enjoy a canal cruise or simply turn on the tap, remember Waterschap Amstel, Gooi en Vecht. It’s the silent guardian of this region’s water, working tirelessly behind the scenes.
