Did you know Amsterdam has some of the oldest still-functioning locks dating back to the Middle Ages? We’re standing at the Grote Sluis, a crucial part of Amsterdam’s water management system. The Grote Sluis is more than just a lock. It’s a testament to Amsterdam’s ongoing battle and relationship with water.

Centuries ago, Amsterdam was a city vulnerable to flooding. The Amstel River flowed directly into the IJ, an arm of the sea. High tides and storms threatened the low-lying land. That’s where the Grote Sluis, or Great Lock, comes in. These locks protected the city against high tide and helped refresh the canals.

The process was ingenious. When the locks were closed, the water from the Amstel would fill the canals. This raised the water level. Then, at low tide, the locks would open. A rush of water would flow out to the sea. This sluicing action, or “spuien” in Dutch, helped clean the canals.

Technically, the area between both pairs of sluice doors is the ‘kolk’. The Kolksluis is one of Amsterdam’s oldest. The rushing water through the lock created an underwater vortex. The Dutch identified these vortices and called them ‘kolks’. The Kolksluis plays a vital role in maintaining Amsterdam’s water quality to this day.

Take a moment to look around. Notice how the water flows. Imagine the city centuries ago. The Kolksluis was essential for the city’s survival. Locks like the Grote Sluis shaped Amsterdam’s history and allowed it to flourish as a major trading center.

The Oudezijds Kolk is a narrow sluice that runs from the Oosterdok to the Oudezijds Voorburgwal. The Kolksluis crosses the Zeedijk. Standing on the bridge, the Oudezijds Voorburgwal is an excellent spot for great photos. From here you can also see the Armbrug and the Old Church further away.

If you take the sidewalk to Prins Hendrikkade, another great photo spot is revealed. Here you can photograph the sluice and lock and the Old Church perfectly lined up. The Oudezijds Kolk has several warehouses dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. One of Amsterdam’s oldest warehouses is at number 5. It was built in 1617. It is called “Het wijnpakhuis Malaga” and it now houses private apartments.

So, as you continue your journey, remember the Grote Sluis. It stands as a reminder of Dutch ingenuity and their constant interaction with water. It’s a living piece of Amsterdam’s history. A piece that continues to protect and sustain this remarkable city.
