From the heart of the flower bulb region, blossoms a town known as Hillegom. This isn’t just any town. Hillegom pulses with a vibrant history tied to the land and the blooms that spring forth. Located in South Holland, Hillegom is nestled within the “Dune and Bulb Region,” a place where sandy soil and determined hands have cultivated fields of vibrant color for generations.

Hillegom’s story begins, as many do, with a name. Derived from the Hijlighem Abbey, meaning “Holy Home,” the town’s moniker whispers of a past long gone, a time when the abbey stood tall. Today, the title “Lord of Hillegom” is held by Jan Six X, a link to a lineage intertwined with the town’s destiny. Hillegom’s roots trace back to the intersection of an old route between Leiden and Haarlem, where it crossed the babbling Hillegommerbeek. The suffix “-heim” suggests an origin before the year 1000, a whisper of ancient settlements. By 1150, records indicate the presence of a church or chapel, solidifying its place in the community.

Hillegom even played a role in Dutch politics. During the 14th century, the counts of Holland convened within its borders three times, elevating the town’s importance. Imagine the bustling activity, the whispers of political discourse carried on the wind. From a modest 283 inhabitants in 1369, Hillegom grew to 412 by 1477, a testament to its burgeoning significance. The Eighty Years’ War, a period of upheaval and conflict, left its mark on Hillegom. The town faced near destruction in 1577, caught between the warring Spanish and Dutch Rebel armies. Yet, from the ashes of conflict, Hillegom rose again, driven by the fertile ground and the ingenuity of its people. The cultivation of fruits and vegetables flourished in the sandy soil, breathing new life into the recovering town.

A pivotal moment arrived in 1722 with the arrival of Jan Six II, a wealthy Amsterdam merchant. His investment in Hillegom brought improvements, including a stone bridge spanning the Hillegommerbeek and a pump in the village square. He later acquired Het Hof, an estate that would eventually become Hillegom’s town hall. Numerous estates dotted the landscape, owned by merchants and stadtholders, their names echoing through the neighborhoods that exist today: Bethlehem, Oostende, Horstendael, and many more. The 19th century brought the rise of the bulb flower industry, forever changing the landscape of Hillegom. The grand estates, once symbols of prosperity, slowly faded as land was cleared for fields of vibrant tulips and other blooms. The establishment of a lime-sand brick factory in 1904 accelerated this transformation, demanding vast amounts of sand and further shaping the town’s identity.

Hillegom continued to evolve throughout the 20th century, its convenient location attracting families who worked in nearby cities like Haarlem, Amsterdam, and Leiden. Today, Hillegom stands as a testament to resilience and adaptation, a town deeply rooted in its floral heritage while embracing a diversified economy. When the vibrant hues of spring paint the fields surrounding Hillegom, the spirit of the town comes alive. The Bloemencorso, a spectacular flower parade, winds through the streets, a celebration of the beauty that has shaped its identity. Come, witness the magic of Hillegom, a town where history and horticulture intertwine.
