Whispers of history linger here. This is Volkspark Amsterdam. Or at least that’s what it should be called. The name Volkspark evokes images of community a place for the people. But the information I have focuses on the Vondelpark. This is a beautiful park. It’s Amsterdam’s largest and most famous park. It boasts a rich history and many attractions. People flock here to enjoy sunny days. They walk their dogs jog roller-skate or simply relax on the grass. Free concerts are held at the open-air theatre and bandstand in the summer. The park has a bronze monument to the poet Vondel. There’s also a Picasso sculpture.

But what about Volkspark? The available information doesn’t seem to cover it adequately. The descriptions all point to Vondelpark. Both parks may exist in Amsterdam. Perhaps the names are similar but distinct. Maybe one is a smaller park or a different area. The details on the layout activities and history are identical to the descriptions of Vondelpark.

The Vondelpark’s history is fascinating. It started as a muddy dump. It needed complete renovation every 30 years. This is because the ground constantly settles. If they didn’t do this work the whole park would flood. It almost does after heavy rain just before renovations. You can’t simply pump out the water though. That would endanger nearby buildings. These older buildings have wooden foundations. The groundwater must be preserved. The park is nearly 150 years old now. It has many old trees. It’s home to many birds.

Vondelpark has become a central part of Amsterdam. Originally it was on the edge of the city. A committee of prominent citizens raised money to create it. They hired landscape architect Jan David Zocher. Zocher used ponds pathways and vistas to create an illusion of a natural landscape. The park opened in 1865 as Nieuwe Park. The name changed in 1867. This was when a statue of the poet Joost van den Vondel was placed in the park. The park expanded over the years to reach its current size of 45 hectares.

The Vondelpark Pavilion was built in 1878. It replaced a wooden structure. Until recently the Film Museum was housed there. Now it is home to a film festival. If Volkspark is a different park. I apologize. My knowledge is limited on that particular location. Let’s move on to explore other wonders of Amsterdam. Perhaps another park or another historical place will provide the Volkspark story.
