In the year 720, a simple wooden church arose in the small village of Attingahem, now known as Breukelen. This act, inspired by Saint Boniface, marked the beginning of Breukelen’s long and fascinating history. Breukelen sits northwest of Utrecht, nestled along the serene Vecht River. It’s a place of remarkable beauty, close to the Loosdrechtse Plassen, a popular area for both nature enthusiasts and tourists. The region, known as the Vechtstreek, is steeped in history and charm. Breukelen itself is more than just a picturesque town. It’s the very namesake of Brooklyn, New York. Imagine, in the 8th century, a Frisian nobleman named Atte established a fortified farm here, called the Breukelerhof. This marked a significant development in Breukelen’s growth. During the 17th century, wealthy Amsterdam merchants, drawn by the tranquil beauty of the Vecht River, built grand mansions along its banks. These elegant homes stand as testaments to a prosperous era. However, not all was peaceful. In 1672, the Disaster Year, Breukelen suffered greatly. Warfare ravaged the area, leaving destruction and devastation in its wake. The French troops left a scar on Breukelen. Yet, the town persevered. Centuries passed, and Breukelen continued to evolve. In 2011, it merged with Loenen and Maarssen to form the municipality of Stichtse Vecht. Breukelen remains a place of significance. It’s home to the prestigious Nyenrode Business University, founded in 1946, a hub for business and finance education. From a humble wooden church in a small village, Breukelen has blossomed into a town of historical and cultural importance, its legacy stretching across the ocean to its namesake, Brooklyn.
