Circling above Knooppunt Badhoevedorp, a hawk catches the thermals. It sees the flow of traffic navigating the interchange of the A4 and A9 highways. Knooppunt Badhoevedorp, opened in 1967, was a marvel of engineering. It was one of the first full cloverleaf interchanges with dedicated merging lanes in the Netherlands. This crucial junction, near Badhoevedorp and Schiphol Airport, quickly became a vital artery in the nation’s transport system. The hawk’s keen eyes also spot something unique about Knooppunt Badhoevedorp: the Schiphol railway line nestled within the median strip of the A4. This unusual integration of road and rail speaks to the innovative design of the interchange. But the hawk, a witness to the passage of time, has also seen change coming to Knooppunt Badhoevedorp. In 2005, a decision was made. The A9 would be rerouted to the south of Badhoevedorp. This meant a transformation of the interchange. The old cloverleaf design would give way to a hybrid, combining elements of a turbine interchange and a cloverleaf. The transformation began in late 2013. The hawk circled, watching the construction unfold below. By 2017, the landscape had shifted. The A9 no longer cut through the heart of Badhoevedorp, flowing instead along its southern edge. Knooppunt Badhoevedorp, redesigned and rebuilt, continued to facilitate the flow of traffic, a testament to the ongoing evolution of infrastructure.
