Wasn’t Queen Wilhelmina present at its opening? The Elthetokerk a grand Amsterdamse School building once stood proudly at the corner of Insulindeweg and Kramatweg. This wasn’t just any church. It was a significant part of the Indische Buurt. Built in 1929 thanks to architect Cornelis Kruyswijk it served as a spiritual heart for the community. The Elthetokerk boasted 850 seats arranged radially. This clever design meant churchgoers faced the pulpit and organ regardless of their location. A striking tower stood against the church’s side. A testament to the architectural prowess of the era. Sadly the Elthetokerk’s story isn’t without tragedy. In 1943 a stray bomb from World War II damaged its beloved organ. Despite this setback the congregation persevered. They even secured a replacement organ in 1949. This wasn’t just any organ. It came from the Bunge family’s estate in Aerdenhout. The Elthetokerk stood until 1992 when it was sadly demolished. However its legacy lives on. Some of its stained-glass windows found a new home in the Muiderkerk. Others found their way into the renovated Elthetokerk’s original building on Javastraat. Today the congregation continues to thrive in this beautifully renovated space. A symbol of resilience. A reminder of a vibrant past. The Elthetokerk’s story continues in this reformed space a testament to the enduring spirit of the community it served.
