In 1920, a new community began to blossom in the IJpolder near Oostzaan: Tuindorp Oostzaan. Built for shipyard workers, this burgeoning neighborhood quickly developed a vibrant spiritual life. The Orionschool became a shared sacred space, hosting Catholic mass at 9:00 am, Reformed services at 11:00 am, and another Protestant denomination at 2:00 pm. This interfaith harmony set the stage for the story of the Bethelkerk. The Protestant community initially fell under the jurisdiction of Oostzaan. However, by 1925, a new congregation emerged from the Reformed Evangelism movement in Oostzaan. These worshippers first gathered in the Julianaschool, but in 1927, they found a dedicated home in the wooden Bethelkapel near Kometensingel 1. Another Protestant group followed suit, establishing their own wooden church across the street. The original Bethel congregation became part of the Amsterdam Reformed Church in 1937, designated as district 32a, connected to the Sarongemeente near Kamperfoelieweg. The Bethelkerk as we see it today arose in 1958, replacing the earlier wooden structure. Sadly, the original Bethelkapel was later destroyed by fire. A twist of fate occurred during the devastating flood of 1960. The lower level of the newly constructed Bethelkerk was submerged. Meanwhile, another Protestant group lost their wooden church in the flood. After a period of using the Bethelkerk and Zonnehuis, they built the Regenboogkerk. The Bethelkerk stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of the community, evolving and adapting through floods and fires. In 1997, both congregations, with their rich histories, came together to share the renovated Bethelkerk. Today, they are part of the Protestant Community of Amsterdam, a symbol of unity and resilience.
