Can you imagine a bridge so steep that even horses struggled to cross it? That was once the reality of Brug 24, right here over the Herengracht. Brug 24 connects the Gasthuismolensteeg and Hartenstraat. This unassuming bridge, nestled among grand canal houses, has a secret history. Early maps from 1625 show a towering structure with five arches dominating the Herengracht. Brug 24 was a formidable obstacle. But time and the demands of a growing city brought change. By 1882, the steep inclines of Brug 24 were causing traffic headaches. A solution was proposed: lower the bridge. The Amsterdam Omnibus Company, eager for smoother tram routes, even offered to foot the bill for Brug 24’s transformation. The project eventually got underway, reshaping the bridge into the more manageable crossing we see today. Brug 24 is a witness to Amsterdam’s evolution, where practicality sometimes trumps picturesque. Even in 1959, Brug 24 underwent more renovations. The road surface was replaced. And the clearance height had to be lowered again.
