Have you ever felt the wind whipping across a vast expanse of water? Right here before us lies the Gooimeer a lake of immense beauty and intriguing history.
The Gooimeer isn’t just any lake. It’s a bordering lake nestled between the southeastern part of North Holland and Flevoland. This body of water holds a significant place in Dutch history and geography. Before the creation of the Flevoland polder the Gooimeer was part of the Zuiderzee. Imagine the ancient shores the bustling fishing villages that once lined its edges. Now modern cities such as Naarden and Huizen stand proudly on its southern banks.
The Gooimeer’s calm surface belies a dramatic past. In 1992 tragedy struck. The catastrophic crash of El Al Flight 1862 is forever linked to this lake. The plane’s engines detached and plunged into the Gooimeer. A fishing police officer witnessed this horrifying event. The plane though severely damaged continued its flight for eight minutes before crashing into the Bijlmermeer. This devastating event claimed the lives of both the crew and many residents.
The Gooimeer is more than just a site of tragedy. Its shallow waters which were once part of the Zuiderzee are perfect for recreation. Watersports enthusiasts frequent its harbors in Almere Haven Huizen and Naarden. The lake boasts beaches ideal for relaxation. These shores are shallow making them perfect for families. However the lake hides a secret. Deep pits exist beneath its surface. These were created by sand-suctioning machines. The sand was used to elevate the land around Huizen to create building plots. Beware these deep pits can make the water quite turbulent in stormy weather.
The southern shore of the Gooimeer is a protected Natura 2000 area. Along with the Eemmeer this area provides a sanctuary for many migratory birds. Spring and autumn bring flocks of birds to its shores. It’s a haven for bird watchers. The abundant algae in the shallow waters sustains a rich ecosystem. Unfortunately warmer summers can also see the growth of harmful blue-green algae.
The Gooimeer a seemingly tranquil lake. However its waters hold echoes of both disaster and the continuous cycle of change. It’s a place where history nature and human impact intertwine. It’s a landscape that holds memories. It invites contemplation. Stand here and let the story of the Gooimeer wash over you.
