The Zen Mast is a 30-meter-high artwork by Jeroen Doorenweerd. Inaugurated in 2023, it stands as a reminder of the forest of masts that once dominated this harbor. Imagine this area filled with cargo ships carrying timber. High masts and floating logs were the typical scenery on the IJ river.
Doorenweerd’s Zen Mast evokes this bygone era. It is a mast without a ship. Its reflection shimmers in the water. The artwork connects to the past. It also alludes to a deeper concept. Its subtitle, tatramajjhattata, is a nod to the Buddhist idea of equanimity. It’s about inner peace. It’s about balance that keeps one stable.

Jeroen Doorenweerd collaborated with mast maker Piet Blaauw from Stavoren to realize his vision. He aimed to capture the essence of the old lumber port.
