Zijkanaal A, connecting the North Sea Canal to the port of Beverwijk, could be flooded. This deliberate inundation would create a watery barrier, hindering enemy advance and protecting the city. The canal’s strategic importance is further highlighted by its proximity to Fort bij Velsen. This fort, situated at the junction of Zijkanaal A and the North Sea Canal, guarded the entrance to the North Sea and the canal itself, a direct route to Amsterdam. Along with Fort Zuidwijkermeer and Fort bij IJmuiden, these fortifications formed a formidable line of defense.
