Picture the imposing white facade of Sankt Gertraud church. Its history whispers from every stone. Sankt Gertraud isn’t just a church it’s a living testament to Passau’s enduring spirit. Originally built in 1143 it served as the hospital church of the Sankt Gertraud hospital. In 1301 the church underwent expansion a dedication to Saint Gertraud marking a significant moment in its development.

For centuries Sankt Gertraud stood witness to the bustling life of Innstadt. It endured hardship too. The great Innstadt fire of 1809 left Sankt Gertraud severely damaged. However Passau’s resilience shone through. In 1815-1816 the church was meticulously rebuilt. Kreisbauinspektor Ran son and master mason Augustin Allgeyer led the reconstruction crafting a magnificent neoclassical structure.

The neoclassical style isn’t the only remarkable aspect. Within its walls resides a treasure the Severins Madonna. This life-sized wooden figure from around 1450 is a masterpiece of Passau’s sculptural heritage. It’s a stunning example of late Gothic artistry. The Madonna’s name originates from its earlier home in the Saint Severin church. The Adoration of the Shepherds a painting by Jan Cossiers dating back to around 1620 is another notable artwork. The painting adds a layer of depth to the church’s collection. A baroque holy water vessel made of red marble is there too. A large wooden statue of Saint Conrad and a modern Stations of the Cross complete this artistic collection.

The interior is remarkable too. The church has a barrel-vaulted ceiling. The space is arranged in a clearly defined neoclassical manner. The altar area is beautifully modern. The design is by Tobias Kammerer. A fiery red band on the wall behind the large crucifix rises upward. It melts into an orange yellow heaven. This vividly symbolizes the ascent to heaven.

Sankt Gertraud served as the parish church of Innstadt from 1787. Officially it became the parish church in 1968. However the patronage of the parish remained with Saint Severin of Noricum. This reflects a complex history of shifts and transitions. Even today Sankt Gertraud stands as a beacon of faith a symbol of survival and artistic richness in the heart of Passau.
