At this place more than 100 Dutch civilians were executed. The Fusilladeplaats Rozenoord a World War II memorial stands as a somber testament to this tragedy. It’s more than just a memorial though. It’s a chilling reminder of the German occupation’s brutality.

The name itself hints at a darker past. ‘Fusilladeplaats’ translates to ‘firing squad place’. ‘Rozenoord’ originally referred to a rose garden a peaceful name starkly contrasting with the events that transpired here. This rose garden and a nearby teahouse gave their name to this site in the 1930s.

Between January 18 and April 14 1945 German forces executed over 100 Dutch civilians. Many were resistance fighters. This dark chapter of Amsterdam’s history is commemorated every year on May 4. Remarkably those responsible for these crimes never faced trial. Imagine the pain of the families of the victims.

A simple plaque bears a poignant inscription in Dutch. It translates to “At this place during the last months of the Second World War the German occupiers shot dead more than 100 Dutch people.” These words are a blunt summary of unimaginable suffering.

In 2014 artist Ram Katzir created a powerful addition to the Fusilladeplaats Rozenoord. This new memorial in Amstelpark features empty chairs. Each chair represents a known victim their name etched into the surrounding stone. There’s also a chair for the unknown victims. Six more chairs were added in 2018 after further research revealed six more names. This memorial powerfully visualizes the absence left by the victims.

Witness accounts paint a grim picture. One account describes the victims’ pale faces their fear their final thoughts. The firing squad’s cold precision the icy silence following the volley of shots. The account concludes with a reflection on the sacrifices made for the freedom we enjoy today.

The Fusilladeplaats Rozenoord isn’t just a place of mourning. It’s a powerful reminder of resilience in the face of unimaginable horror. The continued commemoration ensures that the memory of these victims is not forgotten. It’s a solemn invitation to reflect on the cost of freedom. The Fusilladeplaats Rozenoord memorial remains a vital part of Amsterdam’s story. It serves as a warning and a tribute to those who fell.
