Strandeiland is the newest addition to the IJburg archipelago. It’s the fifth and final inhabited island. Before us lies a future neighbourhood. It will be a significant part of Amsterdam. Construction started in 2023. The southern part Muiderbuurt will be the first to see homes built.
But Strandeiland is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a project built on democracy. The DemoS project started in 2018. It aims to give future residents a voice. Think about it. A city beach already exists on the western side. A temporary restaurant De Japanner is already open. People enjoy watersports there already. There’s a plan for a 750-meter-long beach. There will be a harbor with restaurants. A wild natural edge is planned for the south side facing the IJmeer. This is not just urban development. It’s creating a vibrant inclusive space.
The island is divided into two main parts. The Pampusbuurt in the north and the Muiderbuurt in the south. There will be a central lake called Het Oog. This lake will be a gathering place. It will become the heart of Strandeiland. The eastern part is called Oosterend. The island will connect to Centrumeiland to the west. A future connection to Buiteneiland will be to the north. Public transport is already improving access. Bus 360 is running there. The IJtram will arrive at the end of 2025.
