Ever wondered about a place where history whispers on the wind? Welcome to Warmond. This charming village boasts a history stretching back millennia. Warmond is a place where echoes of the past mingle with the gentle lapping of the Kagerplassen.

Warmond emerged from prehistoric beginnings. Around 2550-2400 BC, a small settlement thrived here. Archeologists unearthed pottery fragments and bones. The bones revealed diets of barley, hazelnuts and berries. There were also bones of pigs, cows, sheep and goats.

Later, the Romans arrived. They established a fort near Leiden. This brought trade and relative safety to the area. Discoveries from this era include pottery shards and a coin. These finds illustrate Warmond’s connection to that time.

The name Warmond comes from “Uuarmelde.” This was the original name of a waterway. It is likely the Leede or Hofleede. The name transferred to the settlement. People began living near the water in the early Middle Ages.

In the 13th century, noble families shaped Warmond’s destiny. The first known lord was Frank van Warmond. He witnessed a land donation in 1201. Knights from Warmond fought in significant battles. Jacob van den Woude led the Holland army in 1301.

Warmond gained prominence in 1402. It became a “high and free dominion.” This elevated Warmond to an independent entity. Lords of Warmond wielded considerable power. They even founded two monasteries in the early 15th century.

The 16th century brought devastation. Floods and fires ravaged Warmond. The Eighty Years’ War brought further destruction. Leiden’s defenders burned down buildings in Warmond. This prevented Spanish troops from occupying them.

Despite these hardships, Warmond persevered. The village was rebuilt. The ruins of the church became a Protestant worship site. The Reformation took hold.

The Dutch Golden Age saw famous figures in Warmond. The painter Jan Steen lived here for two years. He drew inspiration from the village. Antoni van Leeuwenhoek attended boarding school in Warmond. Hiëronymus van Beverningh, a negotiator, lived here.

After 1700, the Age of Enlightenment influenced Warmond. Johan Conrad Amman, a pioneer in deaf education, lived here. He resided at house Oostergeest.

The 19th century brought industrialization. In 1842, Warmond got a train station. The first railway accident in the Netherlands occurred here in 1843.

Despite industrial advances, Warmond remained largely agricultural. Farmers raised livestock and grew crops. Bulb cultivation became prominent around 1880. Fields transformed into vibrant displays of tulips.

The 20th century was marked by world wars. During World War I, Warmond welcomed Belgian refugees. In World War II, the village faced German occupation. Resistance members risked their lives. A British bomber made an emergency landing nearby.

After the war, Warmond rebuilt. New neighborhoods arose. Yet, some landmarks disappeared. In 2006, Warmond merged into the municipality of Teylingen.

Today, Warmond retains its charm. Its rich history is visible. The village has a protected townscape. Visitors can explore the “dammetjes.” These are parallel streets that reflect the medieval layout.

The Huys te Warmont is Warmond’s sole surviving castle. The foundations of a V1 rocket site can be seen. There are many old farms in Warmond. These landmarks narrate the story of Warmond.

Warmond stands as a testament to resilience. The village blends history with natural beauty. It invites you to explore its storied streets. It also asks you to uncover its hidden treasures.
