In 1922 a branch office of Jehovah’s Witnesses was established in Amsterdam. This marked a significant moment in the history of the Kingdomhall of Jehovah’s Witnesses. The early 20th century saw the spread of Jehovah’s Witnesses’ teachings throughout the Netherlands. A young man named Heinrich Brinkhoff played a key role. He shared the teachings with others. These seeds of truth took root. Brother Joseph F. Rutherford’s visit to Europe was pivotal. He established a branch office in Switzerland. This office oversaw the work in the Netherlands including Amsterdam. Brother Adriaan Block was assigned to oversee the work in the Netherlands in 1921.
The establishment of the Amsterdam branch office in 1922 improved the organization of the preaching work. The number of Jehovah’s Witnesses grew steadily. Before World War II approximately 500 publishers were active in the country. The war brought severe challenges. The Netherlands fell under Nazi occupation. Jehovah’s Witnesses were persecuted. Hundreds of Dutch Witnesses were deported to concentration camps. Sadly some 130 died. Despite the harsh persecution the number of Witnesses grew to 3125 by 1945.
Even after the war trials continued. The Catholic Church actively opposed the Witnesses. A notable incident occurred in 1952. The Catholic Church tried to stop an assembly in Venlo. Vendors canceled contracts due to the opposition. Undeterred the brothers set up a tent and held the convention there. Over 1000 people tried to disrupt the program. Police raided the site arresting some brothers. Despite these obstacles the convention continued thanks to the branch office’s guidance.
Jehovah’s Witnesses’ steadfastness was rewarded. In 1983 the Netherlands branch moved to a new facility in Emmen. In 2022 the number of Jehovah’s Witnesses in the Netherlands was nearly 30000.
