Picture this: a charming green-tiled building. This is In de Groene Hagedis. It stands proudly at Amsterdamseweg 485. It’s more than just a building. It’s a piece of Amstelveen history.

In de Groene Hagedis wasn’t always a landmark. It began in 1914. Mr JH Schietekatte commissioned its construction. Architect L van der Bijl designed this beautiful home. Schietekatte sold it in 1920 to the Lantman family. George Henri Lantman a renowned metalworker lived here. He worked from home. He worked for CJ Begeer from 1910. He also taught at the Amsterdam Arts and Crafts School from 1912-1932. He crafted exquisite Art Nouveau pieces. His work included clocks. You can still see some in the Beurs van Berlage. He also made vases jewelry and bowls. Metalworking didn’t provide enough income. So Mrs Lantman opened a pharmacy. She cleverly named it In de Groene Hagedis. The Green Lizard. Mr Lantman loved reptiles. He came up with this unique name.

In de Groene Hagedis became a local institution. It served the community for many years. Its unusual name created local curiosity and lore. People passed it daily. The name itself sparked conversation. The house is a municipal monument. It represents a fascinating blend of personal history and local business. The building reflects the artistic spirit of the early 20th century. It stands as a testament to a family’s entrepreneurial spirit and a father’s love for reptiles. It’s a silent observer of the changing streets of Amstelveen. It has seen generations pass by. Each one with their own stories to tell.

The Green Lizard. It’s more than just a name. It’s a story waiting to be rediscovered. A story woven into the fabric of this quiet corner of Amsterdamseweg. A story which continues to fascinate people to this day. So take a moment. Look at In de Groene Hagedis. Let its quiet charm captivate you. Its story is waiting for you.
