Picture this a long and slender waterway cutting through the Dutch landscape. This is the Leidsevaart a canal connecting Leiden and Haarlem. It’s not just any canal. It’s a historical marvel a testament to human ingenuity and perseverance.

The Leidsevaart was dug in 1657. That makes it one of the oldest canals in the Netherlands. For almost two centuries it was the primary transportation route between Leiden and Haarlem. People and goods traveled along its waters in trekschuiten. These were canal boats pulled by horses or sometimes even men. It was a reliable comfortable and cheap way to travel. Much faster than walking and more pleasant than a bumpy coach ride. Seven kilometers per hour that was the speed of progress on the Leidsevaart.

Think of the wealthy Amsterdam families. Many had summer homes along the Leidsevaart or Spaarne River. They’d arrive in style by barge their belongings transported right to their doorstep. Many estates even had private canals dug for this very purpose. The remnants of those old canals are still visible today. Though probably too shallow for a trekschuit now.

The Leidsevaart wasn’t free. Its upkeep was funded by tolls and taxes. Estate owners paid for canal spurs leading to their homes. They paid additional taxes for fishing rights swan keeping rights or simply for using the canal. Landowners whose land was used for digging the canal were compensated. However they also had to pay for bridges crossing the new waterway. Even the trekschuit owners paid taxes for using the canal. Passenger transport by trekschuit was taxed higher than freight transport by barge.

In 1842 everything changed. The railway from Leiden to Haarlem was built. The many drawbridges along the Leidsevaart. Plus the various taxes made the trekschuit service less attractive. The canal quickly fell out of favor. Today it’s unsuitable for boat traffic. Mostly unused. A quiet whisper of its former glory.

But the Leidsevaart’s legacy lives on. It continues to be a charming reminder of a bygone era. A time of trekschuiten horse-drawn barges and bustling trade. Imagine the stories it could tell if only it could speak. The Leidsevaart a canal frozen in time. A beautiful and evocative testament to Dutch history.
