Step into the Purmerends Museum. This former city hall on the Kaasmarkt holds centuries of Purmerend’s history. The museum opened in 1946 having started life as the Oudheidkamer Purmerend in 1942. It’s more than just a building though. It’s a journey.

Imagine Purmerend in the 14th century. A small fishing village strategically nestled between lakes. It blossomed into a bustling market town. The Beemster Purmer and Wormer polders were drained. This fueled Purmerend’s growth. Its location proved perfect for trade. The city thrived. It became a hub for fishing cattle and wood trades.

But Purmerend’s story isn’t just about commerce. Around 1900 it became a surprising center for Jugendstil earthenware. Four factories sprang up between 1895 and 1907. Wed NSA Brantjes & Co NV Haga Jb Vet & Co and L Huisenga produced stunning pottery. Renowned designers like August Falise Chris van der Hoef and Henri Teixeira de Mattos created vases statues and tableware. The Purmerends Museum boasts the largest collection of this exquisite Jugendstil earthenware.

The Purmerends Museum reveals more than just clay. Famous architects JJP Oud and Mart Stam were Purmerend natives. Their early works are showcased here. So too is the work of graphic designer Jac Jongert. He later designed the iconic Van Nelle house style in the 1920s and 30s. His early career was spent in Purmerend. The museum displays his early designs.

The museum also houses a wide array of artifacts. These include paintings prints books letters photos and everyday objects. They paint a vivid picture of Purmerend’s past. From its humble beginnings to its artistic flourishing.

Beyond the permanent collection the Purmerends Museum features temporary exhibitions. These often focus on the city’s history or hand-painted ceramics. After your visit explore the Museum Shop and Purmerend Tourist Information Office. You can find local products maps and hiking routes there. The Purmerends Museum offers a complete experience.
