Deep in the Jordaan, nestled away from the bustling streets, lies a hidden treasure called Karthuizerhof. It is a quiet oasis. Karthuizerhof whispers stories of centuries past. Let’s step back in time to 1650. The Karthuizerhof was born from the vision of city architect Daniël Stalpaert. He designed a haven for widows with children. The city purchased the land, formerly the site of a medieval Carthusian monastery. Originally named Huys-zitten-Weduwen-hofe, it became known as Karthuizerhof. The design featured four brick wings enclosing a spacious courtyard. Two pumps provided water. These features remain to this day. The triangular pediments in the courtyard display Amsterdam’s coat of arms, three St. Andrew’s crosses, and the old seal, the Amsterdam Cog Ship. Karthuizerhof provided housing for around 100 widows and unmarried women. Daughters could stay until 18 and sons until 19. Besides free housing, residents received bread, cheese, sixpence a week, and 25 tons of peat annually. In 1870, management shifted to the Civil Poor Authority, and later to the Director of Municipal Nursing Homes in 1927. In 1973, the elderly residents left. The Karthuizerhof was unofficially squatted with the city’s consent. A plan allowed organizations to use the small houses for youth housing. During urban renewal in 1985-1986, the Karthuizerhof was renovated. It was transformed into 65 HAT units. The privatized former Municipal Housing Company, now Ymere Wonen, manages the rentals. Karthuizerhof, a hidden gem, still stands as a testament to Amsterdam’s history of caring for its citizens.
