Around 1100 a small fishing village emerged. It was known then as Sandevoerde. Sand and voorde meaning ford. This perfectly describes its location. Situated near a ford through the sands.

Sandevoerde. A name whispered through centuries. A name that conjures images of simple fishermen’s lives. Lives intertwined with the rhythm of the tides. The relentless ebb and flow of the sea.

For many centuries Sandevoerde remained a humble fishing village. Its inhabitants dependent on the bounty of the North Sea. But change was on the horizon. The 19th century dawned. It brought with it a new era of prosperity. Zandvoort as it was later known began its transformation. It transformed into a seaside resort. This mirrored the trend seen in similar towns in the United Kingdom.

In 1828 the first resort opened its doors. This marked the beginning of Zandvoort’s rise as a popular tourist destination. Wealthy visitors flocked to its shores. Notable among them was Elisabeth of Bavaria. She visited in 1884 and 1885. The opening of a railway station in 1881 further boosted tourism. The tram connection to Haarlem in 1899 made it even more accessible.

The Second World War cast a long shadow. Zandvoort suffered greatly during the conflict. Beach access was prohibited in 1942. The town was almost completely evacuated. Resorts and avenues were demolished. This made way for the Atlantic Wall’s coastal fortifications.

After the war Zandvoort rebuilt itself. Tourism surged. In 1948 Circuit Zandvoort was constructed. It hosted the Dutch Grand Prix for many years. Zandvoort continued its growth. Today it remains a major Dutch resort. Nearly half its workforce is employed in the tourism sector.

Sandevoerde. The name evokes a sense of history. A history woven into the very fabric of this seaside town. From humble fishing village to renowned resort. Its story is one of resilience. It is a story of adaptation. It’s a story etched in sand. A story carried by the waves. A story for you to discover.
