Hidden along the quiet side of the Hoofdvaart canal, just outside Nieuw-Vennep, sits Kleine Vennep. This isn’t just any farm; it’s a “kop-rompboerderij,” a head-body farmhouse. The head is the living quarters, while the body is the barn. Kleine Vennep dates back to 1928. Around 1950, it grew even larger with the addition of another barn from a nearby 19th-century farm. This unique blend of old and new earned Kleine Vennep the title of a Rijksmonument, a national heritage site. The farm is currently run by Dirk Molenaar, the third generation of his family to manage the property and its six hectares of land. The Molenaars lease the land from the municipality of Haarlemmermeer. They grow wheat, barley, potatoes, onions, and flowers. Interestingly, the municipality also owns the farm itself. An agreement exists that if the municipality needs the land for development, the Molenaars will cede it. In return, Dirk was able to keep the farm in his family and lease the surrounding municipal land. Kleine Vennep stands on the edge of Park 21, a park still under development. This partnership between the Molenaars and the municipality is transforming the area around Kleine Vennep into a publicly accessible estate. Look closely at the front of the farmhouse. You’ll see a tile tableau proudly displaying the name “KLEINE VENNEP.” The estate surrounding the farmhouse offers a variety of spaces. There’s a circle of elm trees, planted in collaboration with the municipality. In 2017, the Finnish-Dutch community donated hundreds of young birch trees to celebrate 100 years of Finnish independence. Children can build huts in a designated area, adding to the playful atmosphere. And in 2019, numerous trees were planted for National Tree Planting Day. Kleine Vennep also plays an educational role. A special orchard features “forgotten” fruits like the medlar and the Gieser Wildeman pear. Schoolchildren visit to learn about food and nature. The large field on the estate hosts sports and games, including a challenging obstacle course. Kleine Vennep is also a venue for events. The Grazende Zwaan theatre festival takes place here annually, bringing the arts to life amidst this tranquil setting. Future plans include more theatrical, musical, and artistic performances. The possibilities seem endless, with potential for meeting spaces, catering services, and even a bed and breakfast.
