“A safe haven,” a child’s voice echoes, clinging to the hand of their parent as they enter Kinderboerderij Gliphoeve. Kinderboerderij Gliphoeve isn’t just a petting zoo. It’s a vibrant heart within Amsterdam’s Bijlmermeer district, a green oasis amidst towering buildings. Kinderboerderij Gliphoeve is a place where the community converges, a melting pot of ages, backgrounds, and abilities. Here, everyone is welcome seven days a week. The laughter of children rings out as they explore the playground. Gentle hands reach out to pet the resident animals. The aroma of freshly baked pancakes drifts from Pannenkoeken Restaurant Gansi, a tempting treat after a morning of play. Kinderboerderij Gliphoeve started humbly in the 1970s. Floor Döll, a tile setter with a deep love for animals, noticed some stray chicks and rabbits around the Gliphoeve area. Remembering his childhood joy of riding his grandfather’s pony through the Kinkerbuurt, he began to gather these small creatures. This simple act of kindness blossomed into what we see today. Kinderboerderij Gliphoeve is now a testament to Döll’s vision, a place where the community can connect with nature and each other. It operates under the Stichting Werkwijs, an organization dedicated to social integration and work participation for young people facing employment challenges. Kinderboerderij Gliphoeve offers these young people a safe and supportive environment to gain valuable work experience. The activities at Kinderboerderij Gliphoeve are diverse, ranging from annual table football tournaments and family days to educational animal lessons and pancake baking. Children can participate in pony riding lessons or join exciting outings to Texel, Muiderslot, or a biological farm. Community initiatives, like gardening projects and a paper recycling program, further strengthen the bonds within the neighborhood. In 2013, Kinderboerderij Gliphoeve received recognition for its valuable contributions. It was awarded an honorary certificate from the Oranje Fonds as a “Kroonappeltje,” chosen by Amsterdam residents as the most beautiful social initiative. This recognition underscores the importance of Kinderboerderij Gliphoeve as a cherished community asset. As the sun begins to set, casting long shadows across the playground, families gather their belongings. The animals settle down for the night. Kinderboerderij Gliphoeve stands as a beacon of community and connection, a reminder that even in a bustling city, a safe haven can flourish.
