How about a watery tale? The Oudezijds Kolk, or OZ Kolk as the locals call it, is a narrow canal. It offers a glimpse into Amsterdam’s intricate waterways.

The Oudezijds Kolk connects the Oudezijds Voorburgwal and Oudezijds Achterburgwal. It runs under the Zeedijk to the Open Havenfront. The canal also links to the Geldersekade under the Prins Hendrikkade.

This small canal has been nicknamed “Het Kolkje”. The Oudezijds Kolk has played a vital role in Amsterdam’s water management for centuries.

The Kolksluis is a lock and bridge numbered 302. It dates back to the early 15th century. It originally served as a drainage ditch to the IJ, which is now the Open Havenfront.

The Kolkswaterkering is another key feature. This water barrier and bridge 301 connects the canal to the Open Havenfront.

Picture this: the Kolksluis working diligently since the Middle Ages. In 1702, the original vault of the lock was replaced by the bridge we see today.

During high tide, the lock closes. It protects the city from flooding. The Amstel River flows into the canals south of here. It raises their water level. When the tide recedes, the lock opens. The water flows out to sea. This process keeps the canal waters fresh. It is called spuien or sluicing.

Take a look around. Notice the single quay on the southeast side. It is only open to pedestrians. On the northwest side, buildings stand right at the canal’s edge. Among them is the Basilica of Saint Nicholas. It was once known as St. Nicholas inside the Walls. There was also a paint factory here once.

You can also spot several warehouses from the 17th and 18th centuries. One notable building is the national monument Oudezijds Kolk 5. It is called “Het wijnpakhuis Malaga”, or Malaga wine warehouse. Built in 1617, it now houses private apartments.

The France Hotel Amsterdam stands at Oudezijds Kolk 11. It adds to the historical charm of this area.

Imagine the Oudezijds Kolk in 1625. It ran down the triangle of land to the left of the Amstel Damrak’s mouth. Consider the bustling activity along the canal between 1890 and 1905.

Even now, the Oudezijds Kolk offers a captivating view south toward the Old Church. It is a testament to Amsterdam’s rich history. The lock mechanism itself is a marvel of engineering. It is a reminder of the city’s ongoing battle with water.

So, as you stand here at the Oudezijds Kolk, remember its story. This small canal has played a crucial role in shaping Amsterdam. It has protected and sustained the city for centuries.
