Johan Cruijff Boulevard also seamlessly links to the Amsterdamse Poort shopping center. The boulevard, aptly named after the legendary footballer Johan Cruyff in 2020, replaced its former name, ArenA Boulevard. It’s more than just a thoroughfare. Think of it as an expansive plaza, lined with impressive structures. These include Villa ArenA, AFAS Live, Pathé Arena, offices, and a variety of shops and restaurants. Johan Cruijff Boulevard thrives on a grand scale, boasting expansive shops and large entertainment venues. It’s a place where people gather before and after major events, a buzzing meeting point amidst the excitement. The Johan Cruijff Boulevard evolved alongside the ArenA, the stadium that became the Johan Cruijff ArenA. In the mid-1990s, as the stadium rose from the then undeveloped landscape, the area west of the Amsterdam-Utrecht railway began its transformation from primarily office spaces to a leisure destination. The goal was to create a cohesive entertainment area. The plan included the boulevard, stretching from the stadium under the station to Hoekenrodeplein and the existing Amsterdamse Poort shopping center. This involved raising both the station and Foppingadreef to accommodate the ambitious project. The boulevard became the heart of this burgeoning entertainment district. A cinema, concert hall (originally the Heineken Music Hall), and numerous large stores were part of this vision. The boulevard is a testament to continuous development. Plans have evolved, some partially realized, others abandoned altogether. In 2007, half of the boulevard and the Amsterdamse Poort underwent a redesign. The dull concrete slabs were replaced with a vibrant mosaic of colored bricks, creating a dynamic and inviting space. Innovative lighting, reminiscent of a starlit sky, replaced the standard streetlights. Long benches offer comfortable resting spots, enhancing the boulevard’s social atmosphere.
