Journey back to the 14th century. Imagine a wealthy nobleman, Reinier Dever, commissioning a grand keep. This keep would become Huis Dever. Huis Dever stands before you as a testament to his vision. This isn’t just any castle. It’s a “donjon,” a type of fortified tower common in Holland’s coastal areas. Many similar structures have vanished over time, making Huis Dever even more special. Originally, Huis Dever faced the Lisser Poel, a marshy lake. This meant the back of the castle didn’t need heavy fortifications. No danger threatened from that side. However, the curved walls facing outwards are nearly two meters thick. They are a testament to the castle’s strength. These walls stand on foundations more than three meters deep. They rest on a sturdy sand plate. This explains why, after six centuries, the walls show no signs of sinking. In the early 16th century, a small house was built against the rounded front. This modest structure would eventually become part of the grand Huis Dever mansion. By the 1630s, the mansion expanded into a large keep. Sadly, poor foundations and neglect led to a partial collapse in 1848. The resourceful villagers of Lisse then used the fallen stones for their own buildings. In 1962, the residential tower’s roof also collapsed. The sturdy walls, however, remained defiant. Restoration efforts finally began in 1973. Today, Huis Dever has been renovated to its former glory. You can now explore its fascinating history and view authentic medieval artifacts. Inside, a small archeological museum showcases finds dug up from the former moat. Huis Dever is more than just a castle. It’s a survivor. It’s a story of resilience and restoration.
