Gazing at the Koningskerk, have you ever considered its unique facade? The Koningskerk isn’t your typical Amsterdam church. Built between 1954 and 1956, this modern marvel stands proudly on Van ‘t Hofflaan in the Watergraafsmeer district. Its boxy, brick structure and towering, separate steeple might seem stark at first. But closer inspection reveals an intriguing feature. The Koningskerk boasts large glass-in-beton windows, some of the first of their kind in the Netherlands. Designed by Berend Hendriks and crafted by Huub Loontjens’ studio, these windows aren’t your ordinary stained glass. The thicker glass creates a unique light play, full of irregularities and textures that add to the church’s charm. One window depicts a knight battling a seven-headed dragon, symbolizing Christ’s triumph over Satan. Another portrays an angel holding a papyrus scroll. These striking images, embedded within the rectangular concrete slabs of the facade, have been likened to a crossword puzzle. Inside, the Koningskerk houses a 1960 Mense Ruiter organ. Its visible pipes were a point of contention between the architects and the organ builder, showcasing the artistic debates that shaped this building. Originally a Reformed church, the Koningskerk has been home to the Evangelical Brotherhood since 1994, welcoming a diverse congregation, particularly from the Surinamese community. Around this time, the interior brick walls were painted white, adding a modern touch to the space. The Koningskerk’s unique blend of modernism and biblical imagery makes it a hidden gem in Amsterdam’s architectural landscape. Recognized for its significance, it was listed in the Top 100 of post-war heritage and declared a municipal monument. So, next time you pass by the Koningskerk, take a moment to appreciate its unusual beauty and the stories it holds within its walls.
