Ever wonder about the journey of Dutch transportation? The Nederlands Transport Museum once stood here to tell that story. It offered visitors a unique opportunity. They could explore the history and culture of transport in the Netherlands.

The Nederlands Transport Museum was located in Nieuw-Vennep near Haarlem. It was a short drive from Amsterdam. The museum resided in the former Bols factory. It later housed Fokker Services. The museum opened its doors on April 28, 2018. Sadly, it closed on March 6, 2023.

Inside, the Nederlands Transport Museum showcased a wide array of vehicles. These represented the evolution of transport. Exhibits included land, water, and air vehicles. Visitors could see wooden carts from the Middle Ages. Classic cars, motorcycles, and old buses were also on display.

The museum aimed to narrate the story of Dutch transport. It covered everything from the marshy delta of 2000 years ago. It also showed the logistics hub that the Netherlands is today. Each object had a story. These ranged from Roman touring cars to modern container transport.

The Nederlands Transport Museum was a collaborative effort. The ‘Stichting Nederlands Transport Museum’ united eleven foundations. These foundations were active in mobile heritage. Some had aviation backgrounds. Others focused on vehicle preservation. There was even a narrow-gauge railway foundation.

One special exhibition featured paintings by Thijs Postma. Postma was renowned for his precision and detail. Many knew him from magazines like ‘Kijk’. His KLM posters were famous. He designed liveries for Martinair and Transavia aircraft. Postma also wrote aviation books.

The Nederlands Transport Museum featured several unique aircraft. A Douglas DC-2 once graced the collection. A Fouga Magister was also present. Numerous gliders were on display. Special restoration projects included a Noorduijn Norseman. A Bell 47G helicopter and a Cessna Bobcat were also part of the collection.

A subway carriage represented a significant era of transport. Known as ‘Zilvermeeuw’ or ‘Cookie Tin’, it symbolized a generation of subway cars. Volunteers worked to remove graffiti from it.

The Nederlands Transport Museum also displayed bicycles and mopeds. These belonged to the theme of transport. They were displayed on storage racks from the old Lucas Bols factory.

Despite its closure, plans are underway for a new location. A piece of land has been acquired near Hoofddorp station. The Nederlands Transport Museum hopes to build a new home there. A fundraising campaign has begun. The Nederlands Transport Museum faced challenges. UNESCO raised concerns. They worried about the impact on the Stelling van Amsterdam World Heritage Site.

The Nederlands Transport Museum may be closed for now. Its legacy of preserving Dutch transport history lives on. Hopefully, it will open again soon. It will continue to educate and inspire.
